I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS MADE IN GERMANY OR AUSTRIA. THIS EXAMPLE ACTUALLY MAY BE VERY RARE. AS YOU CAN SEE IT IS CONSTRUCTED WITH FINE CUT or PRESSED GLASS. THE BODY HAS 7 LONG PANELS & 9 ROUND THUMBPRINT WINDOWS ON A VERY PLEASING SLOPED FORM.

THE TOP EDGE IS BEVELED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. THE BASE IS VERY WELL BALANCED AND THE HANDLE IS VERY THICK & STURDY. THE LID IS PEWTER or ZINC. IT HAS AN EXCELLENT THUMB LIFT AND IS VERY WELL ATTACHED TO THE HANDLE.

THE LID IS DECORATED WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE FRUITS OR NUTS AND IS FINISHED WITH A PINECONE FINIAL. IT IS DISTINGUISHED BY ITS MARKS INDICATING DIE FLEDERMAUS 13 JANUAR 1878. THIS IS THE VERY FAMOUS BELOVED OPERETTA BY AUSTRIAN COMPOSER JOHANN STRAUSS II THAT PREMIERED IN VIENNA IN 1874.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE CONNECTION IS REGARDING THIS STEIN AND THE DATE 1878. PERHAPS THIS WAS A PRESENTATION PIECE POSSIBLY GIVEN TO AN NOTABLE CONDUCTOR. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME SMALL BITES [read below and see all pictures], THIS STEIN IS STILL VERY USABLE AND WILL DISPLAY NICELY.

I HOPE AN OPERA LOVER WILL WANT TO OWN THIS STEIN! IF YOU COLLECT BAVARIAN DRINK WARE THIS STEIN WILL BE A WELCOME ADDITION.

Approximately 8 3/4" high at the rim, 11" high to the top of the lid finial, 11 1/2" high at the top of the thumb lift, 2 3/4" across the top 5" left to right including the handle and 4" across the foot. Filled to within 1 inch from the rim, the capacity is 16 oz. The weight is just about 2 pounds 11 oz.

Please allow the photos to guide you as they are the lion's share of this description. Considering the advanced age the condition is good overall. This is what I see: there are some various size nibbles along the bottom edge and side of some of the vertical panels; there is a small indented area below where the handle is attached; the underside of the lid has some blotchy areas; there is a faint mark here and there and there are many scratches on the bottom of the foot [view the close-up photos]. Otherwise, I do not see anything of very serious consequence to describe.

Please ASK QUESTIONS in order to avoid any misunderstandings regarding the condition. I hope I have not missed anything. If I did, it was surely minor and 100% unintentional. Just about 99% of the collectibles I offer are vintage/pre-owned and may show a small amount of use.
