Antique German Blown Glass Beer Stein Alpine/Tyrolean Train Scene c. Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made of hand-blown crystal glass with applied handle and enameled decoration. The design shows people in Tyrolean attire on board of a passenger train apparently entering some familiar area. It looks like a local mountain train bringing passengers up the mountain for a hunting trip. (Or, maybe, these are people coming to a shooting competition - a popular German festivity of the time).

I think the picture is a copy of a popular painting of one of many German or Austrian painters working with Alpine and Tyrolean themes. Apparently, the Tyrolean life was considered true German unspoiled bucolic way of living. There were several painters from the late 1800s to the early of 1900s who created Tyrolean genre scenes - the most famous were Franz von Defregger, Eduard von Grützner, Adolf Eberle, Emil Rau, Paul Felgentreff, etc. I don't know who exactly created this particular scene but it is made in style of all the artists above. The steeple form lid made of heavy ornate pewter with a cartouche thumblift. It is engraved with the original owner's name:'Englbert Reinthaller. This is a very impressive stein measuring 9.5 tall to the top of the finial with the capacity of 0.5 L.
