Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Red Flashed Engraved Wedding c. Description: This very interesting stein was made in the mid-1800s, about the 1850s. Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle. Wide pedestal with large pontil mark.
There are three medallions that were flashed with bright ruby-red color. This is accomplished after a metallic oxide is applied to the body and the glass is reheated. The oxide provides the color and leaves a thin layer on the surface of the glass.
By scratching, cutting, or engraving this layer, the clear glass underneath is revealed. This can create many different effects commonly called cut-to-clear. The medallions a nicely decorated with beautiful engraved decorations very typical for this period.
This type of glass engravings was made with a lathe mounted copper wheels smeared with a grit paste. This is a very old glass decoration technique going back to Babylonian times.
It is made with the great skills - a true antique art object. The central medallion is decorated with two hearts with sprouting flowers and the words: "Aus Liebe" - (Out of love).Most likely the stein was ment to be a wedding gift - they were expensive at the time and considered a perfect gift for weddings. This type of glass beer steins was very common in the 1850s - 1860s. The steins of this kind came mostly from Bohemia.
Heavy hand-applied handle, five-ring closed type hinge, small ball for the thumblift - all the signs of mid-1800s. The lid medallion is decorated with the tools of a farmer's trade and the words: "Glick und Segen den Landmann" - (Happy and blessed be the farmer). Most likely the stein was a wedding gift for a farmer couple. The stein is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs in the body.
