Antique German Character Beer Stein - Monk by Merkelbach and Wick c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural".

This particular one is made in a shape of a smiling monk wearing his robe with a rosary on his side. His head forms the lid.

Monks were always asociated with brewing and beer drinking so a stein in form of a monk was the most popular character stein in Germany. Made of the very traditional tan pottery with green and brown glazes glaze and pewter mounts.
