Antique German Character Beer Stein - Monk Pewter Head by Merkelbach and Wick c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in the shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural". A monk character stein was the most popular - they were made by many manufacturers including Merkelbach and Wick, Marzi and Remy, Hauber and Reuther, and so forth. This particular one is made in the shape of a very happy, laughing monk wearing his robe with a rosary on his side.

His head forms the lid. The stein is made of tan pottery but the head is formed of metal - it is very nicely hammered pewter with amazing attention to the details.

There are many types of the monk steins - this particular body was made by Merkelbach and Wick - one of the major Westerwald beer stein manufacturers in the "Golden age" of stein making. The monk stein production started in 1870s with the peak of popularity in the 1880s - early 1890s. This stein was mostly made with a ceramics inlay head and some were made with pewter, bronze copper or even silver heads. It is known that M&W ordered the heads somewhere else and assembled them in it's factory.
