Antique German Character Beer Stein - Smiling Monk by Merkelbach and Wick 0.3L c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural". This particular one is made in a shape of a monk wearing his robe with a rosary on his side.
His head forms the lid - he's got a smiling happy impression on his face. Monks were always asociated with brewing and beer drinking so a stein in form of a monk was the most popular character stein in Germany. Made of the very traditional gray saltglazed stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze and pewter mounts.
It has the same body but the head is different - he has a beard and wearing a hood. I also have several monk steins in a larger size. Please take a look at my auctions. Excellent flawless condition - no chips, cracks or other damage. This is a smaller stein - it is 6 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0,3L capacity.Get images that make Supersized seem small.
