Antique Large Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein/Pitcher #1002 Happy Drinkers c. Description: Large and beautiful Mettlach pouring beer stein model number 1111 was manufactured by Villeroy and Boch in 1876. It is decorated with elaborate relief in tan saltglazed stoneware on gray textured surface with enameled insides. The main decoration is made of high bas-relief showing two happy drinkers raising their glasses. The spout is decorated with a face of a bearded man in line with a long German tradition of Bearded man jugs (Bartmann Krüge) featuring the face of a bearded man at the neck representing the mythical woodland Wild Man of Germanic folklore, a symbol of strength and endurance.

The inscription reads: Das Jahr ist gut, braun Bier ist gerathen. (The year is good, braun beer is recommended) The stein is fully marked at the bottom with Mettlach Mercury mark and mold number 1002. There is no date mark but using the dot system described in G. Kirsner's "The Mettlach Book" we can figurte out the year of production as 1873 (three dots starting from the right). The stein is very large and impressive - it stands 12 tall to the top of the thumblift, 2.5 L capacity.
