The stein presented was made around 1840s and is very well preserved for the age. Les Paul in his book "Early Stoneware Steins" presents this type of stein on page 385. He states that steins without cobalt decorations are not found so frequently in Westerwald as those with cobalt or manganese decorations, but they became quite popular in the second half of the 18th century. Instead of blue or purple decorations these pieces were decorated with etched, incised or stamped patterns. This particular stein is decorated with a beautiful etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. The lid is pewter with an acorn for the thublift and 5 -ring closed type hinge. As I mentioned before the stein is in a very good condition, there are some small manufacturing impurities - please look at m y pictures - a nd some age-related wear. It is 1 3.5 to the top of the thumblift, a little over 2L capacity. I guarantee my dating and description!
