Antique Mettlach Beer Stein #285 Horn Family Crest dec. Made of stoneware with enameled decorations. The decorations depict a Coat-of-Arms with a crest atop of it showing a hunting horn with a cord with blue background and the Prussian Eagle with yellow background. I think this is the Coat of Arms of one of the branches of von Horn family - specifically the one from Prussia. There were several von Horn generals in Prussian army during a large period of time. I've provided a picture of von Horn' original coat of arms for comparison. Marked with incised "VB" mark, impressed mold number 285, and the date mark 92 for the year of 1892. This 285 model were mostly made blank for some special orders private decorations made by outside decorators. There is also a decorator's signature - v.

This is the signature of Friedriech van Hauten - the most famous enameler and decorator based in Bonn, specifically, "Van Hauten and Springmann" as was the company's official name. Fritz van Hauten decorated and designed many glass and pottery beer steins.

His decorations are famous for the beautiful coats of arms, student association symbols and general Historismus paintings featuring landsknechts and kinights. The stein in excellent condition with some minor age-related paint wear - there is no cracks, lines, chips or repairs.

The lid is sitting tight. The interior is white with no staining. The stein is 6.5 tall to the top of the lid, 0.5L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/minor paint wear. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
