Antique Mettlach Beer Stein Etched #2035 Procession Bacchanalia c. Made in the "etched" technique - the famous Mettlach etched method that made it so famous.
The theme of the stein is a humo rous procession of festive and drunks carrying Bacchus or Dion y sus - the legendary god of wine and intoxication. Bacchanalia, orgies in honor of Dionysus, were introduced in Rome around 200 BC. These infamous celebrations, notorious for their sexual and criminal character, got so out of hand that they were forbidden by the Roman Senate in 186 BC. The stein is marked with Mettlach incised tower mark, model number 2035 and 95 for the year of production 1895. The lid is inlaid with ceramic decorative etched inlay in the same manner as the body.The thumblift is made in the form of a gnome's head - great impression, these thumblifts by Mettlach were not very common. The stein 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. It has an extended base for putting a music box.
