Antique Mettlach Beer Stein Etched Werner & Margaretha signed F. Description: This gorgeous stein was made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in 1899. It is made in etched and mosaic technique, with the relief enamel creating a wonderful effect.
The design of the stein was created by F. Stuck - a prominent Mettlach artist whose style is easily recognizable and whose signature is very well known to the Mettlach collectors. The stein portraits a loving pair - these are Werner and Margaretha, the main characters from "Der Tropmpeter von Saeckingen" - a poem by Victor von Scheffel written in 1885. The inscription reads: Und sie flog in seine Arme und sie hing an seinen Lippen, und es flammte drauf der erste schwere, süsse Kuss der Liebe. And she flew into his arms and she hung on his lips, and then the first heavy sweet kiss of love followed.(The translation courtesy of the "Beer Stein Library"). The stein is fully marked on the bottom with Mettlach tower mark, mold number 2009 and "91" for the date of manufacturing 1891. The lid is pewter with a specific thumblift and ceramics inlay showing the Freiherr (baron) - father of Margaretha. The stein is in perfect condition except for lid inlay - it shows the signs of repair even though it's not easily noticeable.
In any case, this is a nice and impressive stein, with history and tradition behind it. It is 7.5 tall, 0.5 L capacity. Condition: Lid inlay repaired, otherwise excellent.
