The design for the stein is made in silhouette style - the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject. This is quite interesting and no so common technique - there are very few steins like this. The paper silhouette portrait making was very popular at the end of the 1800 - early 1900s. The Mettlach silhouette steins mimicked this fashion to create simple and humorous images of night life and drinking culture. The stein depicts a humorous scene of a student, apparently drunk with a a key trying to make it to the keyhole. A night watchman is trying to light illuminate the target. We know this person is a student by the inscription "Gaudeamus igitur" - (Let's Rejoice), the first words of a very popular student song that became the anthem of students all over the world. The lid is dome-type of the highest quality Mettlach pewter work. The stein in excellent condition with no damage and clean interior. The lid is sitting tight. It shows some oxidation but there is no tears, splits or repairs whatsoever. The Mettlach lids were always the best quality. Marked with stamped Mettlach green Mercury mark, impressed mold number 1526 and decoration number 1272. There is also impressed date mark "07" for the year of 1907 according to Mettlach markings.
