Antique V&B Mettlach Beer Stein Etched #2001B Book Series - Medical c. It is a part of the largest stein series made by Mettlach - The Book Stein Series. This series, first made in 1891, consists of eleven steins depicting books for various professions ("profession steins") and one special order stein for Cornell University. Each of the twelve steins exists in 1/2-liter content only.

The profession steins are listed in the Mettlach catalog under form #2001 with the respective letter as Bücherrücken für... Book backs or spines for... Followed by the corresponding profession.

These steins are credited to Otto Hupp because sketches of six of the incised lids found on these steins have been located in his personal effects. The titles of the eleven books depicted on the stein body are predominately Latin. The books on the steins, which are medical text books, are two volumes of Deutsche Chirurgie (German Surgery) by Billroth & Lücke; Archiv für Klinisch Chirurgie (Archive for Clinical Surgery), dated 1860; Aetiologie Der Tuberculose (Etiology of Tuberculosis) by Koch; Kleinere Schriften by Virchow; Reichs-Gesund: Heits-Amt (German Department of Public Health) by A.

Mittheil ; Anaesthetica (Anesthesia) by Nepom Nussbaum; Schadellehre (Phrenology) by Franz Jos. Gall; De Corporis Humani Fabrica by And. The lid is silver-plated metal made by WMF company.

Please note - this is the original lid for the stein - someone who bought the stein did not want the more common inlaid pewter lid, but special ordered the more expensive WMF lid. The lid shows "i/o" and "16" marks, which are WMF technical marks. The stein is in excellent condition - there is no damage or repairs, the lid is sitting tight, the gold is all intact, the inside of the stein is not stained. The silver-plated lid is naturally patinated.
