The stein was a part of the "Rockwood" series that Mettlach artists modeled on the popular at the time American hand-painted dark-brown ceramics wares made by the Rockwood factory in Cincinnatti, Ohio. The series are quite rare in the US where the most popular imports were etched steins. The steins in Rockwood series were hand-painted over transfer outline and color-sp rayed with atomizers to create this rich shading. This stein is decorated with a picture of a smiling man holding a pilsener glass in his hand.Marked with underglazed stamped Mettlach Mercury mark, 6135 decoration number, and also i mpressed 2790 model number along with impressed 34 - quality control number - and " 02" for the year of production 1902. The stein is in excellent condition, there is no chips or cracks, the pewter may need some cleaning but there is no dents or dings, the lid is sitting very tight.
