Antique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Delft-type Beer Stein #5013/5190 c. Description: Beautiful and impressive antique German beer stein made in 1907 by the the most famous firm of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach. The stein was a part of a Historimus-inspired revival of "Delft" series that created beer steins after the famous Delft production.

The series are quite rare in the US where the most popular imports were etched steins. The steins in Delft series were hand-painted with shades of blue on white and h ave beautiful pewter in style of 18th century wares. This stein is made of porcelain and decorated with a portrait af a man in 17th century clothes holding a pokal in his hand. The portrait resembles many such paintings by Frans Hals - I don't know if this is a copy of a real painting or just a portrait in style of Frans Hals. The lid is pewter - the Delft series steins were only made with this type of lid, this fancy pewter lids in style of 17th - 18th century greatly enhance the appearance.

Marked with underglazed hand-painted "V&B M" mark and impressed 5019 model number along with "5190" decoration number, 14 quality control number and o7 date number for the year of 1907. There are some other hand-painted number that most likely asswociated with the artist-painter signature.

The stein is in excellent condition with some age-related wear. There is no lines, cracks or repairs. The stein stands 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
