Antique Mettlach Villeroy&Boch Beer Stein #1526/1074 PUG Swabian Farmer c. Made of pottery in PUG (print under glaze) technique unique to Mettlach. The stein depicts a man dressed like a typical farmer from Swabia smoking his pipe and thinking some heavy thoughts. There is a beer stein next to him and shot glass for some schnapps. The inscription reads: All mei Äckerle, all mei Wiese hent durchs Gürgele abe müsse. Hab noch e Äckerle in der Brach.

Des muss auch de andere nach. All my small fields, all my meadows.

Have now gone through the gullet. I have one field left out in the country. It will have to follow the others. Berthold (Moses Baruch) Auerbach was a Jewish/German poet and author. He was the founder of the German "tendency novel", in which fiction is used as a means of influencing public opinion on social, political, moral, and religious questions.

The verse were clearly meant to address some social or political issue, but what was the exact meaning of this quote and picture I was not able to determine. The design was created by the most famous Mettlach designer - the prominent German artist - Heinrich Schlitt. He was the author of the most famous and beautiful Mettlach stein themes and designs. His signature is at the bottom of the picture. The lid is pewter - this is a special Mettlach dome lid - very solid and classy.

It sits tight on the handle - the Mettlach lids were always the best. Marked with the impressed mold number 1909 and decoration number 1074.

There is also impressed date mark "99" for the year of 1899 according to Mettlach markings, and control number 10. The stein in excellent condition with no damage and clean interior without any discoloration so typical for PUG steins. It is 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
