Antique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein Etched Hunter's Tales #1508 c. Description: This absolutely fantastic beer stein was made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in the year of 1887. The design is signed by C. Goerig - one of the famous Mettlach artists that are not well-known to the public. I wonder if he was related to Karl Goerig - the famous Jugendstil designer who created many beautiful Jugendstil beer steins for Reinhold Merkelbach and others in 1905 - 1910. The stein shows a scene in a tavern where several people are sitting listening to a man in hunter's outfit with a dog at his feet telling some interesting stories, judging by the reaction of listeners. The lid is made of pewter - it is different from a more common inlaid lid, but this is the original pewter lid.

In fact, the pewter lids at the time were more expensive than inlaid ones. The stein is fully marked on the bottom with Mettlach tower mark, mold number 1508 and "87" for the date of manufacturing 1887. The stein is in perfect mint condition there is no chips, crack or repairs. It is very elegant and impressive, 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity.
