Antique Mettlach V&B Large Pouring Beer Stein #3024 Applied Relief Landsknecht w/Stein c. Description: Beautiful and impressive antique German pouring beer stein/pitcher made by the most famous firm of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach. It is made in bas-relief technique with gray-colored stoneware and applied off-white relief figures. With this particular technology Mettlach tried to follow a trend in ceramics of the most popular Wedgewood "jasperware" which in it's turn tried to follow the extremely labor-consuming pate-sur-pate. The stein is made to resemble a beer keg - the surface texture is made as the wood surface. The relief picture on the front of the stein shows a Landsknecht (the Renaissance times soldier for hire) standing by a beer barrel while holding a large beer stein and smoking a pipe. The inscription at the top reads: Gegen Bier und Tabak Dunst alle Weiberlist ist umsonst. Against beer and tobacco haze all women's tricks are in vain.
The lid is pewter with the ceramics inlay. Marked with Villeroy and Boch impressed tower mark.Model number 3024 and date mark 05 for the year of production 1905. Number 16 is the quality control number. The stein is 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1.8 L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
