Antique R. Merkelbach Jugendstil Beer Stein/Pitcher by P. Wynand #2199 c1910s
Merkelbach Jugendstil Beer Stein/Pitcher by Paul Wynand #2199 c. Description: Presented is a very important beer drinking vessel manufactured by Reinhold Merkelbach. Merkelbach was the most modern in terms of design in the period of 1905 - 1910. The ceramic pieces from this period are the best examples of new esthetics that emerged to replace so-called Historismus style that was reigning for almost half a century.

Merkebach employed the most famous and modern artists that worked in Jugendstil style - Richard Riemerschmid, Paul Wynand, K. This one was designed by Paul Wynand and it carries the famous "Merkelbach look" of grey stoneware with the famous "Braun geflammt" and "Koelnisch braun" (Cologne brown) glazes that became the signature look of Merkelbach stoneware.

The stein is featured in "Die Neue Aera" book - the book dedicated to Jugendstil beer steins published in 1987. I have included a scan of this stein picture and description. It was designed in 1911. The Merkelbach mark on the bottom - the one with curved "Reinhold" on the top was in use from 1916 to 1936. The lid is the special Merkelbach lid used for Jugendstil steins most often.

This beer stein is actually a pouring stein - it is quite large and holds 2 liters of brew. The stein is in excellent flawless condition - very well preserved. Merkelbach stoneware of the period employed new technologies creating very sturdy stoneware that rarely cracks. The stein is tall and elegant - it stands 15 to the top of the thumblift, 2.5L capacity. Merkelbach Jugendstil Beer Stein/Pitcher #2199 c1910s.
