Large Antique Jugendstil Art Nouveau Beer Stein S. Gerz #1104 Henry van de Velde? Description: Large and beautiful German beer stein from around 1905 - 1910 - the era of German version of Art Nouveau called in Germany "Jugendstil". Manufactured by Simon Peter Gerz, one of the major beer stein makers. Simon Peter Gerz I was born on 13th September 1830.
He founded his company in 1857, possibly on an existing family pottery business that dated back as far as 1810. His company finally received its license to produce in 1862. Made of traditional gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. Interesting decorations in a typical Art Nouveau "whiplash curve" pattern. There is no record of who designed this stein. I would suggest it was the work of H. Van de Velde or one of his students from the School of Art he established in Weimar. The lid is pewter, nicely patinated. The stein is marked with S. Gerz manufactrirer's mark, model number 1104A and the word "Germany". The stein is large and impressive, standing 11 tall to the top of the thumblift, 2L capacity.
