Large Antique Mettlach V&B Beer Stein # 1028 B as -relie f Harvest c. Description: Beautiful and impressive antique German pouring beer stein/pitcher made by the most famous firm of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach.

It is made in form of a tree trunk and bas-relief technique with brown glaze and tan color. The main decoration is made of dark brown stoneware forming a tree trunk with tan applied decorations in bas-relief technique. The theme is a bucolic harvest scene.

The lid is inlaid with a face showing through the relief. The saying on the stein reads: Nach der Arbeit Müh' und Schweiss, aus mir zu laben ich dich heiss', doch nie zuviel und ohne Sinn, im Krug sitzt oft der +++ drinn! After work's troubles and sweat, I command you to drink out of me. But never too much and senselessly, the +++ often sits therein!

What's interesting about this stein is a decoration on the back showing a mon k's face and a phraze: "Drum treibe Ihn aus" - So drive him out! The +++ in the side saying are substitute for the name of the Old Enemy or devil in other words. This is an addition to the original saying that was added by the decorat or as a joke. The design for this stein is attributed to Ludwig Foltz II.

It was made in 3 sizes - 4L, 2.3L - serving steins and 0.5L drinking stein. This is the largest one - 4 liter pitcher, very large an heavy. Marked with Villeroy and Boch green stamped Mercury mark. Model number 1028, date mark 95 for the year of production 1895, and control number 30.
