Large Antique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein #815 Relief with Gnome Thumblift c. Description: This very traditional and beautiful German beer stein was produced by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach about 160 years ago. The exceptionally crafted ceramics art object consists of a light gray clay body with relief floral ornaments. The relief is very detailed and nicely designed by a great artist. This type of very fine, almost porcelain-like stoneware was unique to Mettlach at the time.
It was made of liquid clay pressed into a mold and allow it to harden enough to coat the walls of the mold. It was fired, the insides were glazed with white glaze and fired again. The lid is pewter with a thumblift in form of a sitting gnome holding a beer beaker. Please note - this is the original lid for the stein. There was a later version of this stein with inlaid lid and female figures on the sides of the body.
This version is very rare and quite expensive. The stein is marked on the bottom with the "815" model number. There is no Mettlach mark, but the stein is well-known and present in the Mettlach catalogs and the "Mettlach Book" by Gary Kirsner on page 58. Fantastic and very beautiful antique beer drinking vessel! The stein is in excellent condition - no chips, breaks or repairs.
It is large and impressive, standing 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1.3 L capacity. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
